2019 William Fremd Tournament Recap

Fremd vs Crown Point

From the tip it seemed as if Fremd was going to make it a long game for Crown Point as 2021 6’0 G Ruthie Montella started the game with 6 points. Soon after, Montella went down with an ankle injury and did not return to the game. Fremd continued to fight as Sr G Emily Klaczek and Sr G Ella Burns lead the way. Fremd went into halftime leading 21 to Crown Points 20. Second half proved to be a tale of two half’s as Crown point out scored Fremd 39 to 22 as 2022 G Jessica Carrothers and Sr Abby Stoddard leading the way for Crown point to a win.

Marist vs Lake Forest

Marist beats Lake Forest 57-53 in a game that went back and forth until the end. The two teams spent the first half feeling each other out. Halle Douglass controlled the pace of the game in that half but Marist held a 4 point lead at the break. Marist was able to get some breathing room down the stretch and hold off Lake Forest with some stifling defense. Halle Douglass of Lake Forest led all scorers with a game high of 23.

Benet vs Lincoln Way West

Benet wins a tightly contested matchup versus Lincoln Way West 59-54. Benet jumped out early against West and was able to maintain a lead throughout the game. In the second half, Lincoln Way West started to chip away at the lead with some really tough man-to-man defense. Taylor Gugliuzza seemed to be more aggressive attacking the basket and she also hit some 3’s in crunch time. Benet’s lead started to dwindle because of missed free throws but they were able to hang on for a tough win behind Molly Sheehan’s big time shot making in the fourth quarter. Molly Sheehan led Benet with 19. Taylor Gugliuzza of Lincoln Way West led all scorers with 24.

Montini vs Maine West

Montini stuns Maine West with the 1 point win in a game that was dominated by both defenses. In this exciting matchup between two teams who will have a say in a state title run for their respective classes, Montini ended Maine West’s 44 game winning streak. Maine West took a lead early in the game with Oregon commit Angela Dugalic leading the way. Montini was able to get the lead back in the second quarter with their defense and timely shot making. In the second half, Dugalic found herself in foul trouble and Montini was able to take advantage of her absence. Dylan Van Fleet of Maine West also fouled out late in the game which was hard to overcome for West. Late in the game Sophie Sullivan made big shots to help propel her team to the victory. Sophie Sullivan led Montini in scoring with 12. Angela Dugalic had a game high with 17 for Maine West.

Kenwood vs Naperville North

Kenwood started the game with heavy defensive pressure as Naperville North struggled with ball pressure. Although this game had some All State power on both teams, it was not a game about the two. This game was based on a total team effort that Kenwood showcased more between the two teams. Naperville North’s  All State player 2021 G Greta Kampschroeder played hard as she attempted to keep her team in the game, but Kenwood’s pressure proved to be too much for them to handle. 2022 G Brianna McDainel showed why she, along side of Kamschroeder is already one of the best guards in the state. She was able to score and get her teammates involved with her great passing ability. Kenwood defeated Naperville North 64-45.

Lake Central(IN) vs Merrillville(IN)

Merrillville jumped on top of Lake central from the beginning to the end of the game. Merrillville Pirates pressed and pressured Lake Central, which caused much confusion for Central as they committed a plethora of turnovers leading to easy baskets. Leading the Pirates charge was 2021 5’2 G Torri Miller and 2022 5’10 G Davina Smith. Final score was Merrillville 57- Lake Central’s 44
